But before you dive into enjoying the delightful aromas of your new candles, it's essential to understand how to properly care for and maintain them. After all, with a little TLC and the right tools like our Candle Care Kit, your scented candles will provide you with hours of blissful fragrance and ambiance. Let's explore some tips and tricks to ensure you get the most out of your candle experience.
Visual Inspection
As soon as you open the box from Vaucluse, please make sure you check the products carefully. Our products are made from glass and hairline fractures. Don't worry, it's very rare but we always ask customers to check that their purchase isn't damaged before use for the first time.
5mm / Half Inch Rule
When lighting scented candles for the first time, it's important to ensure the wick isn't too long. A long wick can lead to mushrooming or your candles taking way too long to heat up and release fragrance. As standard, all Vaucluse scented candles are pre-trimmed to the required 5mm or half inch length.
Clean Candle Wax
Make sure that your candle is free of debris BEFORE you light it. Don't attempt to remove debris when the scented candle is lit, you'll hurt yourself or spill soy wax everywhere. When the scented candle is cool and unlit, use a dry cloth to wipe away any dust or debris. You don't want a scented candle burning dust and releasing a horrific burning scent in your home!
4 Hour Rule
Unless otherwise stated, it's best to never burn a Vaucluse scented candle for more than 4 hours. Doing so can lead to a build-up of heat and molten wax, which in turn, can lead to your wick being soaked and ineffective PLUS your candle container may become too hot to touch! Between 1 and 4 hours is the average time a container candle should burn for.
It's also best to ensure that your scented candle is burned fully across the diameter of the container where possible. If you burn the candle for too short a time, you won't be able to melt the top layer of wax. This means your scented candle will not release all of the scent and you will also create a tunnelling effect the next time you light your candle. This is where the wick burns in the centre of the scented candle but never gets hot enough to melt the wax around the outside of the container. That means you've spent a lot of money and you're not getting the maximum amount of fragrance release, it's also not something you can repair or save. Once the wick burns below the top layer of soy wax, it will be unable to successfully melt wax to the full width of the container!
1 Inch Finale
Never burn a candle all the way to the bottom of the container. During the manufacturing process, the wicks are glued to the base of the container. This glue can begin to melt, the further the candle burns down. If you leave any more than 1 inch of wax in the base of the container, the wick can become detached and will drop to the side of the glass. You don't want this, it will create a hot spot on the container and could fracture it completely! Please ensure you keep a little bit of wax in the base of your candle to anchor your wicks!
